DNA Hard Drives?

Jake Beal muses on the possibility of DNA hard drives in his blog post from April. At a workshop he attended, computer scientists, biologists, chemists, and more scientists from a variety of fields met to discuss the obstacles that still stand in the way of making this theory a reality.

In his blog, Beal says we have just about reached the physical limits of what can be done with silicon. He writes, “The theoretical storage capacity of DNA is about a million times denser than flash drive memory, simply because the molecules involved can pack information that much more densely.”

If data is able to be stored in DNA, Beal says that, in theory, you could “pack one of the gigantic warehouse-complex data-centers that places like Facebook and Amazon build into a single smallish room.”
